2024: The Year of Car Recalls

The automotive industry faced another challenging year in 2024, with over 21 million vehicles recalled in the U.S. due to 635 safety issues by December. With advancements in vehicle technology and stricter regulatory oversight, recalls have become a persistent issue, affecting millions of drivers annually.

Notable Recalls

Here are some of the other major recalls that we have seen in 2024:

Tesla led the industry with 5.1 million vehicles recalled, spread across just 16 recall actions. The company resolved 99.2% of these recalls via over-the-air (OTA) updates, sparing customers from dealership visits.

Stellantis issued the most individual recall actions, with 72 recalls affecting 4.8 million vehicles. Despite its high recall count, Stellantis relied on OTA updates for only one recall, leaving most issues to be resolved through traditional dealership repairs.

Ford had the highest number of vehicles requiring physical repairs, impacting 4.8 million cars across 67 recalls. Despite efforts to improve quality control, Ford continued to grapple with hardware-related issues throughout 2024.

Honda also saw significant recall activity, with 3.8 million vehicles affected across 19 recall actions, placing it among the top contributors to the year’s totals.

BMW issued 36 recalls, affecting nearly 1.8 million vehicles, while General Motors handled 32 recalls, impacting around 1.4 million cars.

By the end of 2024, an estimated 72.7 million vehicles on U.S. roads still had open recalls, underscoring the importance of addressing these safety concerns promptly.
